Jorna Indian restaurant is close by to the River Orwell in Ipswich, Suffolk. Jorna has won various rewards for its food and service. Most notably Jorna came in at fifth place at the renowned Tiffin Cup National Curry competition and crowned as being one of the best in the east!
Like many Indian restaurants, the majority of Jorna's staff and owners hail from Bangladesh. Jorna, Ispwich makes a conscious effort to preserve the Bangladeshi culture through its cooking. With such a large part of the country on low lying coastal land, fish is a very common ingredient and the Jorna chefs reflect this with many succulent fish curries.
The prawns and mussels dish combines the seafood with a thick juicy curry sauce and is seasoned with caramelised lemon juice. Similarly with the use of fish, another common trait of Bangladeshi dishes is that the myth of all curries being hot is dispelled. The perfect example of this being the butter fish curry that is cooked to perfection at Jorna. The dish is a milder curry which uses clarified butter, almonds and cream to create a rich sauce.
Jorna is also happy to create a feast for those feeling less adventurous and with an appetite for their favourite curry. As is the case with most Indian and Bangladeshi restaurant all curries can be adapted to flavour, spiciness and preference. This includes the substitution of vegetables for meat on the majority of curries, so vegetarians needn't fret.
The emphasis of sharing cultures shines through at Jorna. There's a BYOB (bring your own booze) policy, corkage is free of charge and staff are adaptable and welcoming of this side of the Western culture. All waiting staff are knowledgeable and open, talking about their food with passion and heart.
