Charco's Leeds is a much-loved Portuguese restaurant-takeaway that puts piri-piri at the forefront of its menu. For the curious, piri-piri is a chilli-based hot sauce with notes of citrus, paprika and herbs. Its roots can be traced back to Portugal, although it's also popular in much of Africa and Indian Goa. In the UK it's rising in popularity thanks to the Nando's restaurant chain — although, taste-wise, Charco's Leeds certainly gives the restaurant giant a run for its money.
At Charco's Leeds, piri-piri comes in all shapes and sizes. Chicken is the most popular option, arriving as wings, a succulent half or whole, or even a roulette that showcases a variety of piri-piri flavours. The burgers get the piri-piri treatment, too, with chicken, lamb and bean patties dosed with piri-piri seasoning and bookended with a freshly baked sub roll. Alternatively, diners can switch out the burger for pitta bread or a soft wrap.
The salads at Charco's Leeds have a suitably Mediterranean feel, piled high with cherry tomatoes, olives, feta cheese and succulent chicken. The Charco's special salad tops everything off with their signature house sauce. And as for sides, they're a mouthwatering selection of coleslaw, corn on the cob, spiced chips and home-made garlic bread.
The desserts at Charco's Leeds are all designed with a post-spice cool down in mind. Ice-cream and creamy carrot cake are present and correct, plus there's a whole range of soft drinks with which to wash down the meal. They're all particularly popular with children — especially when preceded by a kids' meal of chicken wings, burger or wrap topped with a toy.
