Originally built towards the end of the 19th century by John Alcock Heelis for the breath-taking views of Eden Valley and Appleby Castle, Appleby Manor now stands as a glorious hotel that welcomes in all walks of life, whether they’re looking to relax in one of the comfortable rooms for the night or simply wish to visit the splendid Oak Room Restaurant.
Now accepting the Gourmet Society in the aptly named restaurant, due to its heavily English Oak themed décor, members who call in advance can indulge in everything on the AA Rosette awarded menu at an incredible price.
Begin the experience with one of the sublime starters, such as the rich goats cheese mousse, complete with candied walnuts and poached apples and pears, the tantalising hot and sour prawn ravioli, presented in a spicy fish broth enriched with chilli and greens, and the delectable breast of pigeon, partnered with wild mushrooms and caramelised onion mash.
Continue onto the main course, where a host of marvels await. Particularly merit worthy meals include the succulent Rabbit Three Ways, served as leg, loin and shoulder with carrots and poached salsify, the exquisite monkfish tail, paired with poached raisins, curried cream and a smoked haddock scotch egg, and the divine duo of Cumbrian wild mallard, a combination of breast and confit legs with lavender potatoes and a burnt orange sauce.
There are several savour and sweet conclusions to be sampled in the desserts section as well, ensuring that all diners will be able to partake in a particularly opulent three course meal at the Oak Room Restaurant at Appleby Manor.
