Award-winning The Waggoners in Welyn serves fine French cuisine from the kitchen of an English seventeenth century coaching inn. Indeed, the building's cosy atmosphere and traditional façade belies the quality of cookery taking place inside.

The Waggoners' Head Chef creates sublime French fusion food, with snatches of inspiration taken from around the globe. The menu is a tour de France with its delightful French flavours captured in all their glory. A classic French baguette spread with Normandy butter sits proudly on side plates whilst guests alternate between bites of bread and the superb taste of their starters. The choice is mouth-wateringly good, with ham hock and foie gras terrine accompanied by toasted brioche; salmon confit, and sautéed scallops providing a taste of the sea. The quality of the dishes in terms of both ingredients and presentation is clearly evident, with the precision and attention to detail showcasing considerable skill. With sautéed cod fillet with samphire and saffron butter; chicken ballotine filled with mushrooms and sausage meat, and roasted turbot with celeriac, steak, kidney and oyster sauce, an introduction to fine cuisine doesn't come much finer than this. Renowned as a nation for their patisserie skills, France will be proud of The Waggoners' chefs who have created pure indulgent delights of frangipane, and chocolate fondant with honeycomb and pistachio ice cream. And of course not forgetting some classic cheeses to end the meal on a savoury high. Handpicked wines are procured from some of the finest growers which do justice to the top class menu.
